1. Executive Summary

Netflix Event Pass is a one-time paid access product for select premium live events, designed to convert event-driven demand into recurring membership. It may include limited, curated access to related content during or shortly after the event window — it is not intended to replace Netflix membership or broadly unbundle the catalog. The product targets three high-value but historically under-captured segments: lapsed churned members, price-sensitive non-members, and gifters.

A three-arm experiment with a control (V2 synthetic dataset) suggests that the Ad Plan Offer (Variant A) produced the strongest retained-member outcome, with 7 retained users from 367 landing users (1.91% end-to-end retained conversion), compared with 3 retained from 366 in Variant B (0.82%) and 1 retained from 367 in the Control (0.27%). These results do not establish statistical significance, but they provide a directional signal supporting further testing with real users.

The simulation further indicates that the sharpest funnel drop-off occurred at Membership Offer Viewed → Membership Offer Clicked, where only 31.9% of users continued — making post-event offer timing, copy, and placement the highest-priority next optimization. Stream quality and post-event satisfaction ratings did not show a clear linear gradient with retained conversion in this synthetic dataset, though stream quality should remain a critical guardrail metric in any real pilot.

Key risks include revenue cannibalization of full-price plans and the operational complexity of live-event rights clearance. Recommended next action: advance the Ad Plan Offer (Variant A) into a controlled real-user pilot — with a clearly disclosed, low-friction opt-in confirmation flow — and prioritize improving post-event offer click-through before broader deployment.

2. Problem / Opportunity

Netflix experiences pronounced, short-duration traffic spikes around marquee live events. Without a targeted acquisition pathway, the vast majority of intent-driven visitors — particularly lapsed members and price-sensitive non-members — either churn immediately after free trial or fail to convert at all.

Key Tensions

The result is a persistent gap between event-generated intent and monetizable subscription growth. Each live event represents a concentrated acquisition window that the current product architecture is not designed to capture.

The Event Pass concept directly addresses this gap by meeting high-intent users with an offer calibrated to their specific friction point: commitment duration and upfront price.

3. Product Concept

Netflix Event Pass is a one-time paid access product for select premium live events, priced at $6–$9, anchored to a specific live event. The pass grants access to the live event and may include limited, curated access to related content during or shortly after the event window — it is not intended to replace Netflix membership or broadly unbundle the catalog. Three offer variants were designed and tested:

The product is intentionally scoped as a low-friction re-entry and acquisition funnel — not a replacement for the existing subscription model. Its success metric is downstream plan conversion, not Event Pass revenue in isolation.

4. Target Users

Three primary user segments were identified and ranked by strategic priority:

  1. Churned / Lapsed Members — Previously subscribed; departed due to price sensitivity, content gaps, or inertia. Highest brand familiarity, lowest re-activation friction, and lowest customer acquisition cost (CAC). Moderate absolute volume. Best suited to targeted re-engagement messaging pre-event.
  2. New Non-Members (Price-Sensitive) — No prior Netflix relationship; motivated by a specific event rather than the broader catalog. Highest absolute volume segment in the V2 dataset. Lowest baseline conversion rate individually, but the largest addressable pool — small percentage gains produce significant scale impact.
  3. Gifters — Purchasing event access on behalf of a friend or family member. An emerging, high-intent segment not separately modeled in V2 but flagged for future instrumentation and user research. Gifter flows represent an unquantified but potentially material conversion channel.

Note on existing members: Existing members are not the primary acquisition audience for Event Pass and should be routed to a separate experience — such as loyalty rewards, referral incentives, add-on content, or enhanced engagement. Their presence in the experiment funnel is valuable as a cannibalization and funnel-confusion guardrail, not as a new acquisition target.

5. User Journey

The following high-level funnel describes the target experience for a New Non-Member — the highest-volume segment in the V2 dataset:

  1. Discovery — User searches for the live event online; lands on the Netflix event landing page via organic search, paid media, or social referral.
  2. Offer Presentation — Event Pass offer is surfaced (e.g., 7-day access at $6.99, ad-supported). Offer arm assigned at this step based on experiment randomization.
  3. Sign-Up — Streamlined account creation flow; payment method captured at checkout. Minimal required fields to reduce drop-off.
  4. Live Event — User watches event in full. Post-event content recommendations are surfaced immediately following the broadcast (catalog browsing encouraged).
  5. Conversion Window — 7-day pass expiry approaches; targeted in-app message or email offers plan conversion (Ad Plan opt-in prompt with transparent pricing and clear terms, or Bridge Offer curated content bridge, depending on arm assignment).
  6. Retained or Churned — User either converts to Standard or Ad-Supported plan and enters the standard member lifecycle, or exits at pass expiry.

7. Experiment Design

Design: Three-arm experiment with a control. Randomized at the user-session level at the event landing page. Stratified randomization applied to ensure proportional representation of user segments across arms.

Assignment: Stratified by user segment (new non-member, churned, existing). Existing members were excluded from offer assignment — no incremental benefit was hypothesized, and inclusion risked plan cannibalization.

Key Insight — Why the Ad Plan Offer Outperformed (Directional Signal)

The Ad Plan Offer's superior retention in the V2 synthetic simulation suggests that it presents a clear, low-friction opt-in to the ad-supported plan at the natural end of the event window, reducing decision fatigue without removing user agency. By meeting users at the moment their intent is highest — with transparent pricing and a simple confirmation step — the Variant A approach provides a directional signal of structural UX advantage over the Variant B curated bridge model. This finding supports further testing with real-world instrumentation.

9. Product Recommendations

Based on V2 synthetic findings, the following prioritized recommendations are proposed:

  1. Advance Variant A (Ad Plan Offer) into a controlled real-user pilot. The V2 synthetic simulation provides a directional signal that a clearly disclosed, low-friction opt-in to the ad-supported plan outperforms the Control and Variant B. Usability testing should validate opt-in discoverability and confirm no dark patterns before any pilot launches.
  2. Optimize the post-event offer click step. Membership Offer Viewed → Membership Offer Clicked was the weakest funnel step at 31.9%. This is the highest-leverage next optimization — improving offer timing, copy placement, and perceived value should be prioritized above offer variant selection.
  3. Use behavioral signals to personalize the membership offer. Post-event ratings may still be valuable for content discovery and personalization, but the V2 synthetic simulation does not support using rating submission as a leading indicator of immediate conversion. Prioritize related content preview clicks, search behavior, and watchlist additions as more predictive near-term signals.
  4. Route existing members to a separate experience. Existing members are not the primary acquisition audience for Event Pass. Route them to loyalty rewards, referral incentives, or enhanced engagement rather than targeting them with offer incentives. Their presence in the funnel is most valuable as a cannibalization guardrail.
  5. Keep stream quality as a guardrail metric. The V2 synthetic dataset did not show a clear linear gradient between stream quality and retained conversion. However, stream quality should remain a critical reliability guardrail in any real pilot — buffering, latency, support contacts, and refund requests should all be instrumented and monitored closely.
  6. Explore Variant B (Bridge Offer) as a secondary path for price-sensitive users. Variant B produced a directional signal (0.82% end-to-end) but should not be prioritized over Variant A at this stage. It may warrant a separate experiment targeting users with demonstrated price sensitivity.
  7. Continue exploring the gifter flow as a future experiment. The gifter segment was not modeled in V2 and represents an unquantified but potentially high-intent population. Recommend dedicated user research (5–8 interviews) and a lightweight prototype test before including in a future experiment arm.
